My work is an examination of what it is that defines the visible world; the subtleties of form, space, atmosphere, color, light and energy. I am searching for a deeper visual experience, where the ordinary becomes the extraordinary.
My earliest memories of childhood are intertwined with images of the landscape. From majestic mountain vistas in Austria, to light playing on the surface of the Long Island Sound on an autumn evening, to magnificent sunrises and sunsets that fill me with reverent awe.
One of my main objectives as a realist painter is to not only convey scientific truth, but to also capture the poetic nuances of the seemingly common and familiar scenes found in nature. My approach, style, and handling of subject matter are grounded in the strengths of tradition, and at the same time blended with a view of the natural world from a contemporary perspective. What I am trying here is to take a closer look.
The landscape is a constant source of renewal, it sets me free, and gives me a much needed sense of balance, a feeling that the earth is young again; an optimistic vision we can carry into the distant future.

I suppose I could say that having come from a long lineage of distinct individuals, many of whom were fiercely independent, my course was set. There may or may not be such a thing as predestiny, whatever the case, I was sure to not choose the middle road.
The path I would pursue encompassed many strong directions that all contain the element of unwavering dedication. I am part of three generations of competitive horsewomen. Horses are my passion. I am passionate about all animals. I began riding at age four, and continue my lifelong commitment to my horses. Another major direction originated early on. In the ninth grade I was the first female student allowed to enroll in woodworking shop. This eventually led to a professional career as a cabinetmaker that spanned more than eighteen years.
It was through a common interest in wood that I met my husband of more than twenty years, Robert Chapman. An accomplished painter, sculptor, and designer, he is also my confidant, my best and worst critic. He was my inspiration to begin my parallel career as a painter, which has become my primary focus. We are very fortunate to share so many similar interests, all of which make for a wonderfully rich living environment full of creativity and beauty.
Together we spent many years on the east end of Long Island, NY, surrounded not only by pristine natural landscape, but also by some of the best artists this country has produced. Consequently, my work ethic was influenced by the highest set of standards put forth by those around me. This solid foundation was brought with us when we moved to California in 2000, and is something that will sustain us, even while living somewhat remotely in the country on our horse ranch we now call home.
